While it is good to have pond
filters refills on hand, you are not likely going to need to use
them very often. In fact, pond filters do not need to be changed often.
Instead, make sure that you clean your filter at the beginning of your
garden pond season – take it out, spray it off, and put it back
in. This is a once-a-year task.
Do not clean your filter too often or change the pond filters refills
often because you do not want to get rid of helpful, algae-killing bacteria
that has formed on the filter. By changing the pond filters refills
often or cleaning them too often, your pond could actually end up getting
dirtier (not as much bacteria to eat away the algae).
