Pond filters are extremely important elements of a healthy fish pond.
So, what exactly do pond filters do? Why do you need them? Pond filters…
· Reduce algae growth (they reduce nutrients needed for algae
growth)
· Remove debris and dissolved waste
· Protect the pump (by removing debris that could clog it)
· Break down toxins caused by fish waste, fish food, or other
decaying organic matter
In truth, the last item on this list is, perhaps, the most important.
You may think that the main purpose of pond filters is to remove visible
“grunge” from your water to create clear, beautiful, healthy
water for you fish. Some pond filters (especially the more expensive
ones) can remove a lot of debris from your water.
But the most important thing that pond filters do is to remove invisible
toxins – the toxins created by decaying fish waste and organic
matter. As water passes through pond filters, “good” bacteria
break these things down, creating a healthy environment for your pond.
You may be wondering if it is absolutely necessary for all fish ponds
to have pond filters. After all, none of the ponds created by nature
require pond filters, right? This is true, but it took much time for
those ponds to establish a natural balance. Yes, you can try to establish
a balanced nitrogen cycle in your pond, but this will take much longer
and will require more skill and patience than using pond filters –
make sure you have lots of plants, not too many fish, and add the fish
well only after the plants are established.
